Never is it more important to work with people you like and trust than when you are buying or selling a home. After all, your home will probably be your most expensive purchase, so you want to be sure the person you work with is knowledgeable, professional, and has your best interests at heart. Because time, money, a pleasant transaction can all go out the window if you hire the wrong agent. And that’s a lot to lose!
So, what can you do to be sure you hire the right real estate agent? Watch our video to find out.
As real estate consultants ourselves, we think it’s important you do your homework when looking to hire an agent for your transaction. Here are a couple questions you should ask any prospective realtor before you ever agree to do business.
#1. Does the realtor have a system or strategy that can show proven results?
Most agents have clients they serve well, but really good agents serve all their clients well. The type of agent you want to work with should have a tried-and-true system for transactions from start to finish. There should be a very clear plan for what actions the agent will take, how they will market your home to potential buyers, and what sets their services apart from other agents in the field.
#2. Can the realtor describe a recent transaction that was challenging and what he or she did to overcome those challenges?
While the agent should have a system, any good agent can tell you that transactions must be also be treated on an individual basis. Many times there will be issues or challenges that come up and you need to know that your agent has the knowledge and experience to handle any difficulties. A good realtor is an expert problem-solver ensuring you’ll have a smoother, more enjoyable transaction.
#3. Would you, as the client, comfortable firing this person?
We hate to think about it, but there are a number of reasons why you might need to have a difficult conversation with, or even ultimately fire, your realtor. And if you choose to work with a friend or family member, that can become a really sticky situation. You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where your personal relationship overrides what is in your best interest as a homeowner. Whoever you choose to work with, make sure that you have a professional understanding and you feel comfortable enough to be completely honest.
At BHURDinUtah we think everyone deserves to have an enjoyable transaction process. And we’re helping people make smart decisions in order to achieve their goals for home ownership.
