When you are a parent looking at buying a home, we know that your decision is affected by your kids. So your home search isn’t just about the house, it’s also about the neighborhood, the proximity to your kids’ favorite activities, and, of course, the school.

So, how do you find a home within your desired school district? It’s actually easier than you think!

Did you know your search for homes can include the option of homes available within a particular school boundary zone? It’s a great feature for families that want to focus their search on a school, or school district, that they know will fit the needs of their children.

First, tell your real estate consultant if a particular school district is a priority in your home search. The Multiple Listing Service, or MLS, acts in a very similar way to most internet search engines. The MLS system allow agents to add as many filters as you want, like city, neighborhood, home style, and yes, even school district.

When you provide your agent with that information, it’s easier to customize your home search to your needs and help you find the home of your dreams.

And since we’re on the subject...Another little nugget of advice we like to give homebuyers with school-aged children is to consider the school commute. Once you’ve found a home within the boundaries of your desired school, you’ll want to find out whether your kids will have access to a school bus and how long the ride takes. If you plan to walk to school, try to make sure you won’t need to cross many busy or dangerous streets.  If you plan to drive, route the rush hour to gauge the traffic.

Since you and your kids will likely be making 180 round trips to school a year, it’s important to take note of how the school commute will play a role in your quality of life. Factoring all these things into your decision will help you to feel confident you are making a good choice for your family!
