When you think of Valentine's Day, you don't usually think of the word "single". Singles can have it pretty rough. The pity looks, half-hearted party invitations, and cliches about binging on candy and Hallmark reruns. It seems that everyone just expects that singles dread February 14th.
But that's not always true! So, instead of adding to the stigma, the BHURD team wants to change things up! So, lets forget the negativity and cliches and celebrate Single Awareness Day! Never heard of it? No problem, it's the V-day for singles. If you’re a party-of-one, we’re here to help you rock that independence with 5 things you can do to celebrate “the holiday of love” while flying totally solo:
1. Love of Learning
Take a solo trip to one of Salt Lake’s fabulous museums. Interactive displays, one-of-a-kind artwork, informative videos, museums are a great place to have some quality “me time” while learning more about history and the world. We’re lucky enough here in Salt Lake to have a wide variety of museums available. So whether you’re into dinosaurs, outer space, contemporary art, or anything in between, chances are you’ll be able to satisfy that passion with a trip to a museum close by.
2. Show Yourself Some Love
It’s Single Awareness day, right? So why not show some love to someone you’ve probably been neglecting: yourself. You deserve to treat yourself to the ultimate day of pampering at the spa. A massage, facial, manicure, pedicure or all of the above are sure to get you feeling better about life. And men, it’s not just for women. There are tons of spas that have services specifically designed for men, so everyone can find something they enjoy.
3. Find a New Love
Why not turn this time to an opportunity to develop a hobby you’ve always admired? But wait, just hear us out, a hobby doesn’t just have to be a time filler you do in between friend hangouts and work. It can become a passion that gets you excited, helps you recover from a long day, or gets your mind working. So if it’s crafting, knitting, biking, skiing, gaming, painting, photography or whatever, find that passion and OWN IT! Find a class, join a group, and start working on that new hobby.
4. Love to Laugh
Because a night full of laughter is so much better than cheap chocolates, how about spending Valentine’s day at Utah’s very own comedy club, Wiseguys, in downtown Salt Lake City. The headliner on Feb. 14 is Steve Soelberg seen on NBC's The Today Show, Oddball Comedy Festival and the comedy DVD 'Peculiar People'. Take yourself on a date that’s sure to leave you in a better mood.
5. Send Love Someone Else’s Way
Who needs hearts of red and pink when you have a heart of gold? Spend the day volunteering locally with the organizations and individuals who are in the most need of your love. Like the Humane Society of Utah, who allows volunteers to work with dogs and cats attending to all their needs. Who can say no to “puppy love”?
So, whether you're flying solo, or have someone to hang with this Valentine's/Single Awareness Day, we hope you find something you'll LOVE to do! After all, life's short! Share happiness and love!
